HELPING TO HEAL TRAUMA. TRAUMA THERAPY PALM BEACH GARDENS

Therapy for the resolution of unresolved trauma is an action-oriented intervention. The goal is to facilitate a complete resolution of the distress associated with the trauma.

Anyone who has experienced trauma will tell you, “trauma has a will of its own.” This means that residual trauma can remain dormant for months, even years after the initial event(s) which caused it. At the most inopportune times, the forces underlying trauma (anxiety, panic, dissociation) can be triggered. Triggers are often related to conditions surrounding the original event such as sounds, smells, and familiar situations.

What distinguishes our Trauma Therapy in Palm Beach Gardens from traditional talk therapy?

Traditional talk therapies are often incomplete and only go so far as to bring about an awareness, without any lasting relief. It is well understood that defenses remain highly attenuated in the present environment once trauma has imprinted itself on our psyches. Therefore, trauma has a memory component, and these memories reside in the body as well as the mind.

Trauma therapy in Palm Beach Gardens is essentially a mind-body approach to healing. The method involves both domains because they are inextricably connected. The therapeutic modality is action-oriented in that it engages the body through movement and focused awareness while simultaneously observing for memories and co-occurring symptoms of distress that arise during guided explorations of the trauma.

Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR) as a highly successful, short-term intervention technique

The specific intervention is called Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR). It is a thorough get-to-the-heart-of-the-problem approach involving:

  • re-exposure (telling what happened),
  • catharsis (feeling the emotions),
  • re-processing the totality of the experience.

With this technique, the individual is able to re-frame events of the past into a coherent, rational framework through which healthier functioning can now develop. The end result is that the power that the trauma once had in keeping the person victimized is now eliminated and a sense of lasting peace takes its place.

Trauma Incident Reduction (TIR) therapy is a longer treatment session than conventional one-to-one therapy. TIR sessions range from 90 minutes to two hours. The benefit of the longer session is that trauma symptom resolution is generally completed within this time frame. The numerous treatment sessions associated with most trauma therapy is not required. A follow-up session of one hour is recommended for integrative work, if needed.
